For those who reflect, the changing of day and night is one of the greatest signs of Allah’s power. In the formation of the heavens, the earth, and the rhythmic cycle of light and darkness, there are clues for every intelligent heart.
Allah repeatedly mentions this sign in the Qur’an — in Surah Al‑Baqarah (2:164), Ali ‘Imran (3:190), Yunus (10:6), and many others — reminding us that time itself is a divine creation.
🌍 The Earth’s Rotation: A Miracle We Do Not Feel
The earth spins on its axis at an astonishing speed of about 1,000 miles per hour. Yet we feel nothing. No dizziness, no shaking, no instability. Allah designed our world with perfect balance so that this immense movement does not harm us.
If the earth did not rotate:
- One side would face eternal daylight, burning under unbearable heat.
- The other side would be trapped in endless darkness, freezing beyond imagination.
- Days could last as long as 243 Earth days, like on Venus — a single sunrise after eight months.
- Temperatures would swing between extremes no living creature could survive.
This rotation is not random. It is a mercy.
🧲 The Magnetic Shield: A Hidden Protection
The earth’s rotation helps generate its magnetic field, a protective shield that blocks deadly cosmic radiation. If the planet stopped spinning:
- The magnetic field would collapse.
- Harmful radiation from space would strike the surface.
- Life as we know it would end.
- No human technology could save us.
Only Allah sustains this delicate balance.
🌌 Time: A Divine Gift
Day and night are not just cycles — they are the foundation of time itself. Time allows us to work, rest, worship, reflect, and grow. It shapes our lives and gives rhythm to existence.
Allah created time through:
- The rotation of the earth
- The movement of the sun
- The phases of the moon
- The order of the universe
Without these, there would be no hours, no days, no months, no years.
🕌 Submission to Divine Knowledge
The creation of the universe is far beyond human or jinn perception. No scientist can witness its beginning; they can only theorize. The only absolute truth comes from the Qur’an.
Our role is submission — to accept what Allah has revealed, to contemplate His verses, and to let these signs increase our faith and awe
إِنَّ فِي خَلْقِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَاخْتِلَافِ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ… لَآيَاتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَعْقِلُونَQuran 28:71–73).
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and earth, and the alternation of the night and the day..are surely signs for a people who use reason. (2:164)
إِنَّ فِي خَلْقِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَاخْتِلَافِ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ لَآيَاتٍ لِّأُولِي الْأَلْبَابِ
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are surely signs for those of understanding. (3:190)
The changing of day and night is a reminder of the passing of time, the nearing of death, and the closing in of the hour.
إِنَّ فِي اخْتِلَافِ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ… لَآيَاتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَتَّقُونَ
Indeed, in the alternation of the night and the day…are signs for a people who are cautious and fear [God]. (10:6)
A sign of Power
The alternation of the night and the day display the power of the Almighty, the Praiseworthy. Have you ever seen a day that doesn’t come after the night, and have you ever seen a night that doesn’t come after the day? Who causes this order and this system, Who is behind the science and the wonder?
اللَّهَ رَبَّكُمْ وَرَبَّ آبَائِكُمُ الْأَوَّلِينَ
Allah , your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. (37:126)
يُقَلِّبُ اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَعِبْرَةً لِّأُولِي الْأَبْصَارِ
He turns about (alternates) the night and the day. Indeed in that is a lesson for those who have vision. (24:44)
وَجَعَلْنَا اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ آيَتَيْنِ ۖ فَمَحَوْنَا آيَةَ اللَّيْلِ وَجَعَلْنَا آيَةَ النَّهَارِ مُبْصِرَةً لِّتَبْتَغُوا فَضْلًا مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَلِتَعْلَمُوا عَدَدَ السِّنِينَ وَالْحِسَابَ
And We have made the night and day two signs, and We erased the sign of the night and made the sign of the day a beholder (when man can see) that you may seek bounty from your Lord (work for a living) and may know the number of years and the account (of time). (17:12)
Having the night and day in succession means the opportunity to have daily habits, and habitual worship based on the timing of the day.He made the day bright, to make easy the earning of livelihood. And He made the night dark, as a time for peace, rest and privacy.
The wordنَھَر means “the opposite of لَیل meaning that the day starts at sunrise and finishes at nightfall. It is broken up into twelve hours. A day lasts 24 hours, beginning at dusk and ending at the same time the next day. The days are used to compute age and time.
The time of year and your location on Earth determine how long the days and nights are. In the end, the tilt of the Earth’s axis and its orbit around the sun are what cause these variations.
The slow variations in day and night, which are the basis for the four distinct seasons, are crucial for plant growth, the survival of all living things, the rainy season and storing water in the ground. The sun is also sign of day and moon is the sign of night.
Earth rotates on its orbit once every 24 hours or about a thousand miles per hour. If the earth is only rotating only at 100 km/h, then the night and the day will be longer than the original condition. The sunlight will burn all life on earth during the day and freeze it at night. So verily Allah SWT has bestowed His grace and kindness upon His creatures. This is what people should be pondering and grateful.
Occurrence of Day and Night According to the Qur’an
Surah Al‑Furqan mentions the creation and purpose of day and night in verses 47 and 62:
“It is He who made for you the night as a covering and sleep for rest, and He made the day a return to life.”
(Al‑Furqan 47)
This verse highlights Allah’s power in creating sunlight and connecting the cycle of day and night. The phrase “the night as a dress and sleep for rest” shows that nighttime is meant for pausing activities, allowing humans to recover their strength for the next day.
Allah also says:
“It is He who made the night and the day alternate for one who desires to take admonition or desires to give thanks.”
(Al‑Furqan 62)
The alternation of day and night is therefore a sign for reflection, a reminder of Allah’s wisdom, and a reason for gratitude.
An Interesting Hadith About the Sun’s Prostration to Allah
Abu Dharr (ra) narrated a profound moment with the Prophet ﷺ. At sunset, the Prophet ﷺ asked him:
“Do you know where the sun goes when it sets?”
Abu Dharr replied, “Allah and His Messenger know best.”
The Prophet ﷺ then explained that the sun continues its course until it reaches a place beneath the Throne of Allah, where it prostrates and seeks permission to rise again. Permission is granted—until a future time comes when its prostration will no longer be accepted. It will ask to continue its usual path, but permission will be denied. Instead, it will be commanded to return from where it came, and thus it will rise from the west.
The Prophet ﷺ said this is the meaning of Allah’s statement:
“And the sun runs its fixed course for a term decreed. That is the decree of Allah, the Exalted in Might, the All‑Knowing.” (Surah Ya‑Sin 36:38)
This hadith is not describing physical movement in human terms, but rather the unseen reality of how Allah manages His creation—beyond human perception and scientific measurement.
“And the earth He has spread out for all creatures” (Al-Rahman 55),
“And for you on the earth is a place of settlement and provision for a time” (Al-A’raf 7:24 )
These verses show that the earth is not random or chaotic—it is prepared, balanced, and sustained by Allah for human life.
WISDOM BEHIND CREATION OF EARTH BY ALLAH
In surah Dhariyat verse 48, Allah SWT says,
And the earth We have spread out, and excellent are the spreaders.
Meaning: “Earth We spread out. (We are) the best of the Spreading Beings.”
Quoted from the book The Miracle of the Creation of Creatures by Imam Ghazali, here are some of the wisdom of the creation of the earth:
1. The place in the north is higher than the place in the south so that water can flow down on the surface of the earth. So that it can irrigate it, and then eventually flow into the sea. If not, then water will flood the entire surface of the earth so that humans cannot carry out their activities and roads will be cut off.
2. The entire contents of the earth are the favor of Allah SWT to his people. Those favors can be utilized and used by creatures on earth.
An example is mining. From mining, humans can find gold, silver, and others that can be utilized.
3. The earth was created as a place for humans to settle, a place to live that protects them from heat and cold, as a place to bury/store anything whose smell can be disturbing, and so on.
4. The creation of mountains on the face of the earth. Allah SWT created mountains because of their many benefits, which no one knows all about except Allah SWT. Mountains store a lot of water and various plants, even mountains become a place for humans to live. All of that can be utilized by humans to fulfill their life needs.
